What does it mean to be Green?
And does it matter...

OK, let's answer the second question first:

"Eco/green/sustainable tourism appears to be by far the fastest growing market sector and it is predicted it to hit 170m of a forecast 850m international tourists and a eco/greensustainable market value of $150bn by 2006. In regional and local markets the eco/green/sustainable tourism value may be much higher."

So it's BIG business and getting even bigger and presumably you'll want your share of it. But, what do these "Green Tourists" want... what does it mean to be "Green"?

A number of definitions of "Green Tourism" include the buzzwords "Small scale". "Local entrepreneurs" and "Local communities" - that's you!

The better news second...

Greenness involves a specific decision on the part of the tourist not only to encourage local economies by buying their goods, but also not to waste energy. Think of it - lower
energy bills for your accommodation, less waste, less washing and ironing. Less COSTS!

And the even better news...

"Donors involvement in developing this trend is substantial. Led by the EU, the World Bank, the UNDP, over $8bn is already invested in tourism-related projects (double the amount of 10 years ago) and reinforced by two Earth Summits, the commitment to sustainability is paramount." This means that there is, or very soon will be, a well-funded green initiative near you. Get involved, believe it or not, you're at the leading edge of modern tourism.
