North
and South Moravia
The
Jeseníky mountains (N Moravia) are the second-highest
mountains in the Czech Republic. Kilometres of marked
trails for walkers go along ridges offering long views
and descend down the valleys through endless fields of
blueberries and grand mountain forests. Both the
Heritage Towns, Olomouc and Novy Jicin satisfy
renaissance and baroque architecture lovers not
forgetting age-old folk architecture in villages and
famous castles like Bouzov. |
 |
Dyje
National Park (S Moravia) is an island of forgotten peace.
Fascinating countryside of the Lednice and Valtice chateaux and
the Kromeriz gardens, both listed as UNESCO Heritage Sites. And
finally the wonderful countryside of the Pálava hills, a UNESCO
biosphere reserve covered with a carpet of old vineyards. All
combine to make an idyllic and unforgettable holiday.
White
Carpathians Mountains (S Moravia) also listed as an UNESCO
Biosphere Reserve, lies on the border between untamed wilderness
inhabited countryside. Here, you are certainly more likely to
meet vigorous and earthy locals than tourists! You may even come
across old holy women, local soothsayers, who were able to cure
bewitched cattle and sick men. It is an area breathing with
tradition and the ancient songs are still very much alive. Each
village had, some still do, its own costume and the tradition of
pilgrimages and other folk celebrations still remain.
The
fantastic countryside, the quantity and quality of the local
flora and fauna, the old customs still in practise, the
excellent wines and distinctive folk architecture all contribute
to create a relaxing and fulfilling holiday. But only recently.
For the last 60 years the Czech Republic has been effectively
hidden from international tourism development. When it opened to
tourism, The Prague 'success' story only showed how mass tourism
can shake the socio-cultural basis of a country. Moravia is
determined to get the tourism benefits in a sustainable way.
