Saadani has the unique distinction of being East Africa’s only coastal wildlife sanctuary, providing an unique opportunity to see Africa’s big game and bird life interacting with the sea.

Here you may see lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo, the rare Roosevelt sable, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, eland and hartebeest. The Wami River attracts a fabulous bird life, large pods of hippo, massive crocodiles and the spectacular black and white Colobus monkey.

The Wami river offers probably the best boat safari in Tanzania. The boat often passes flocks of flamingoes at the mouth of the estuary before entering the river with its abundant wildlife and profusion of bird life.

Explored by foot the reserve is extremely rewarding and highlights how much game lives in close proximity to the beach.

The wildlife is now becoming used to 4x4 vehicles on the game drive. Saadani village, one of the oldest communities on the East African coast, is right at he heart of Swahili culture.

The fascinating history of the village is evident in the remains of the old fort and war time cemeteries, whilst silhouetted prawn fisherman dragging their nets before the coming dawn make an extremely evocative image.

You'll stay at Saadani Safari Lodge, completely refurbished in 2001 and boasting 9 luxury beachfront tent-bandas and one honeymoon suite. All have full en-suite facilities, solar lighting, a private verandah and sit just a few paces from a pristine Indian Ocean beach.
